On Tuesday, an emergency SMS message in the state of California helped avoid a potential power outage

The message asked residents to limit their energy consumption for three hours to reduce the risk of power outages.

The California Independent System Operator (Cal-ISO) said it "immediately noticed a significant reduction in power consumption" after sending the text

The alert was issued after record temperatures put pressure on the state's power grid

The message, known as a flexible alert, was developed by Cal-ISO to encourage consumers to conserve electricity when energy supply is limited.

The messages are sent in advance so that preparations can be made

Some of the suggestions include setting thermostats to 25C (77F) and not using kitchen appliances such as ovens, kettles and microwaves

During the warning hours, people are urged to cool their homes in advance and adjust blinds and curtains to keep windows closed

The alert was issued for 24 counties, including Los Angeles and the Bay Area, because they have a large population and use a lot of air conditioners
